Our Heritage
First Free's roots go back over 100 years when a group of Swedish immigrants began meeting informally in various homes for many years studying God's Word, praying and fellowshiping with one another. In 1889, this group formally became known as the "Swedish Evangelical Free Church." By 1936, church services were conducted in the English Language and became known as "First Evangelical Free Church." Through the years, several sister churches have been started, and we have relocated several times due to growth. At First Free, we have the privilege of being part of a strong heritage of faithful, God-honoring individuals who have worshiped at First Free for many decades.
A number of our seniors have attended First Free since their youth and can vividly recall friends leaving to fight in World War II, the experiences of several moves to new locations, the numerical growth of First Free's congregation, and watch as their children and grandchildren are active members of First Free. We rejoice in God's faithfulness to us as a church body and as individuals.
The Swedish Evangelical Free Church eventually changed its name to First Evangelical Free Church. More significant, though, are the life changes and lifelong commitments made by individuals as God’s truths impacted and altered their lives. Even today, this body of believers endeavors to "make disciples who love God, love One Another, and Love the Lost."
